**This workshop is designed for intermediate players who are fluid in their major and minor scales and have some basic knowledge of jazz modes. Applicable for any instrument!

Hi Friends!

I’m so excited to dive into chord tones and guide tone lines with you! Whether you want to develop more of a jazz vocabulary, understand jazz theory a little bit better or improvise playing jazz, pop, funk music - guide tones are super key for you to learn and internalize. They are one of the most important aspects for hearing movement and tonality of chords and playing cohesive fluid improvised lines.

CURRICULUM

Improvise using Guidetones and Common Tones  (30 min)

Guide tones are the olive oil to your jazz lines, the glue that allows your line to seamlessly connect from one chord to the next! In this segment you’ll learn how to identify and hear guidetones from its  pertaining scale, best practices for learning a new song and how to write and improvise using a common tone line.

Listening Session & Deconstruction (30 Min)

We’ll take a listen to some of my favorite players and songs that utilize guidetone lines in different music setting sand deconstruct what they’re doing to give you a better idea of how and where to integrate your guidetones!

Compound & Restrictive Exercises: How to practice & integrate into your playing (40 min)

We’l go over some key eartraining exercises so you can start to internalize guidetones and integrate them within your lines! We’ll go over my techniques for compound exercises, restrictive practicing and “jam” practicing. You’ll learn how to play different combinations of chord tones and how to approach improvising melodically and with fluidity as you go from one chord to the next chord.  We will also begin to explore adding chromatics into your playing by adding chromatic approach tones.

Q&A: Ask me anything! (20 Min)
